1. At a September 23 reception at BULGARI in Manhattan, LEONTYNE PRICE was presented with GRAMOPHONE's Lifetime Achievement Award by JAMES JOLLY, the magazine's editor. Other winners of 2003 Gramophone Awards, announced at London's Barbican Centre on October 12, included conductor MARIN ALSOP, voted artist of the year, and EMI's recording of The Turn of the Screw, led by DANIEL HARDING.
2. JOSE CURA who made his 1994 North American debut as Fedora's Loris at Lyric Opera of Chicago, returns to that company this month for Samson el Dalila (Dec. 13-Jan. 22). He sings Andrea Chenier in Vienna in February, then reverts to the Saint-Saens for Covent Garden in March. April brings Puccini, when Cura conducts Madama Butterfly for Warsaw Opera, then sings Dick Johnson in La Fanciulla del West in Zurich.
3. LOS ANGELES OPERA has recorded its recent productions of La Damnation de Faust and Nicholas and Alexandra on high-definition video, for the purpose of future DVD distribution. The recordings, directed by veteran BRIAN LARGE, are produced by LAO and Moshe Barkat of Modern VideoFilm.
On Wednesday, December 31, at 8 P.M., LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER presents a New Year's Eve concert with THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC and RENEE FLEMING. ANDREW DAVIS conducts the program, which will be hosted by BEVERLY SILLS. Check local PBS listings for details.
