It was a bizarre year, to say the least _ one that blurred the line between what's real and what's merely reality TV.

The year 2003 was big for returns. It was the return of the Michael Jackson scandal. ``Return of the King'' ruled at the box office. And Mr. ``I'll Be Back'' became the governor of California.

MSNBC's gossip column The Scoop offers a rundown of the year's defining moments, for better or worse:

_Booty of the Year Award: Paris Hilton dethrones long-running queen J.Lo, as the hotel heiress' private parts did bigger box office than ``Gigli.'' Sure, Paris pretended to be deeply embarrassed by her sex-tape scandal, but some who know her said she was thrilled because it made her even more famous.

_Hot Lips of the Year Award: Britney Spears and Madonna, whose same-sex smooch during the opening performance of the MTV Video Music Awards knocked Iraq out of the headlines for a few days.

_Stonewall Gay Rights Award: To Arnold Schwarzenegger, who declared that ``gay marriage is …
