Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D for humans, and 5-15 minutes in the summer sunlight two or three times a week can provide all the vitamin D the body needs. In northern areas, blood levels of vitamin D fall in winter when sunlight is limited. The problem is greater for dark-skinned individuals because pigmentation diminishes the ultraviolet light's penetration. But diet adjustments can usually make up the difference.
