NEW YORK -- MGE UPS Systems Inc. and Ballard Power Systems announced the official launch of field trials for a backup system comprising MGE's Evolution Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and Ballard's Nexa proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell modules. The event included a live October 9th demonstration for reporters and customers in New York City beginning with a simulated blackout in MGE's New York City offices on the 21st floor of midtown high-rise.

During the "blackout," a 3-kVA UPS provided power to a rack of computer networking equipment and a large plasma screen display while Ballard's Air-Gen portable fuel cell generator kept a small refrigerator, lighting …
