NEW YORK, NY -- New York City Police Department's Central Park precinct house was in all electrical jam. The electric grid feed to the historical building--it is actually a converted stable built in 1870--was insufficient and did not provide all the power the station needed. In the summer months, police officers had to shut off the air conditioners to run their computers or the photocopiers. They shelved plans to install an electronic booking system due to the lack of power.
Upgrading the feed presented huge problems. For one, it would cost $1.2 million to install a new feed into the middle of the park where the building is located. It would also require ripping up parts of the park to bury the electrical lines.
