During all address to the emergency Natural Gas Summit in June, Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham evoked images of grandmothers freezing in the dark this winter. Natural gas stores remain low since last winter's unusual cold, and demand continues to increase steadily. The hot summer could exacerbate the shortage, leading to soaring prices.
"America's natural gas shortage affects everyone: front senior citizens living on fixed incomes to small business owners trying to keep the lights on," Abraham said, issuing a call for conservation. And for ways to conserve--including difficult lessons learned--California shows the way.
