The presidency is no accident. You struggle for years to get it, and then you wonder how it happened How did this prize fall into your lap? Then you may ask, "Is it really a prize'? Is it a reward, or a punishment? Is it an accomplishment to be celebrated or a dubious honor to be questioned?"

The community-college presidency is coveted by those who have not yet achieved a presidency. Depending oil the circumstances, a presidency is enjoyed or endured by those who are presidents. Is it a journey or a destination? Some would say it is both.

Seeking the presidency is a journey. Getting a presidency feels like arriving at a destination. However, once one is a president, the realization sets in: The journey continues. The journey becomes more interesting, much more demanding, much more exciting. To follow the journey metaphor, the road rises up unexpectedly and takes dangerous turns, then it suddenly goes downhill and along a steep precipice, and one must concentrate fully in …
