Dec. 10--After city and county officials reviewed the responses last month from entities wanting to buy or lease Memorial Medical Center, one of the four bidders quickly rose to the top because of what it says it plans to do.

The Tennessee-based for-profit Province Healthcare is proposing a 40-year lease or sale that would leave the city and county with $100 million after the debt and other costs are paid off.

Its offer of a one-time $5 million grant to the county's federally qualified clinics Ben Archer and La Clinica de La Familia, as well as a commitment to spend millions upgrading MMC and finishing stalled renovations, also scored points with several county and …
