FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ Imagine running up a long, steep hill and being forced to breathe only through a straw while doing it.
That is what Northern Arizona is hoping Florida Atlantic's players experience after the start of Saturday's Division I-AA quarterfinal in Flagstaff, which is 7,000 feet above sea level, or 6,984 feet higher than the FAU campus in Boca Raton.
Owls coach Howard Schnellenberger said he is not concerned about the effects of high altitude on his team.
``We always played better at Mile High Stadium,'' Schnellenberger said about his experience as an assistant with the Miami Dolphins when they made trips to Denver.
But those who have had to play at Flagstaff's Walkup Skydome said there is no escaping the effects of the thin air.
``It is different. You do struggle,'' said St. Mary's coach Vincent White, whose Gaels played in Flagstaff on Aug. 30.
