DAVIE, Fla. _ If the Miami Dolphins are going to end seven years of December swoons, Sunday is the day to start.
Although four games remain, New England (10-2) will clinch the AFC East title with a victory over the Dolphins (8-4) at Gillette Stadium.
While the Dolphins and Patriots could finish with 11-5 records, New England would win the tiebreaker from having two head-to-head victories.
No team has clinched the AFC East after the 13th game since the 1991 Buffalo Bills, which is why fullback Rob Konrad was surprised that the division title could already be decided at this point.
But the AFC East hasn't proved as stout as expected. Buffalo is only 5-7 after being touted as a preseason Super Bowl contender, and the New York Jets entered Monday night's game against Tennessee at 4-7 largely because quarterback Chad Pennington missed the first half of the season with a wrist injury.
"I thought it was going to be us, New England and Buffalo coming down the stretch," Konrad said. "I thought the Jets had the chance to be pretty good, but when they lost Pennington and (wide receiver Laveranues) Coles, I thought it would be pretty tough for them. It's always been two- or three-team races all the way through.
