WINTER PARK, Fla. _ About 1,500 police and public safety officials from around the state gathered at Calvary Assembly of God Church to bid farewell Monday to an Orange County deputy sheriff who died after being struck by a motorist.
Deputy James Weaver, a four-year veteran, died after an Orlando motorist rammed him Nov. 23 at the scene of an earlier accident on International Drive and Vineland Road. The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver did not see Weaver crossing the street at about 8 p.m. that day. She was not charged.
Weaver, 37, had planned to marry Judy Henao in March. On Monday, Orange Sheriff's Capt. Patty Wells read a letter penned by Henao and a poem entitled "Jovanni's Angel" that eulogized Weaver's role as a father figure for Henao's 6-year-old son, Jovanni.
In the letter Hanao, 27, told her fiance how much she loved him and how much she would miss him. "I only hope you know how much you meant to me," she wrote. "I don't want to go on without you.
"You were our protector and we always felt safe when you were around."
Sheriff's officials said about 1,500 people representing 38 public-safety agencies attended the morning service at Calvary Assembly.
