Roy Williams unwittingly did Bruce Weber a huge favor when he left Kansas to take the North Carolina coaching job last spring.
When Williams went to North Carolina, Bill Self left Illinois to replace him at Kansas. And when Self bolted Illinois, Weber left Southern Illinois to move to Champaign.
Now it would be poetic justice if Weber's undefeated Illini (3-0) knock off Williams' unbeaten Tar Heels (3-0) on Tuesday night in Greensboro, N.C.
"It's kind of ironic that's the matchup," Weber said. "Roy is the one who started it; the dominoes fell because of him. But I don't think the players are making anything of it."
Sophomore guard Dee Brown, leading the Illini with a 27-point average, was among the players who took Self's departure the hardest. But asked if a victory Tuesday would be a form of payback, Brown replied:
"I don't see any connection anywhere. It's Illinois against North Carolina.
