MIAMI _ Alonzo Mourning deserves to have his jersey number retired by the Miami Heat.

Never mind that he played for two other teams in the transient age of sports.

Never mind that he left the Heat over money in a move that was as greedy as it was disloyal.

Never mind that we're too willing to bestow greatness in sports in places where it doesn't exist.

Mourning deserves the honor of having his number retired because he is the best basketball player Miami has ever had.
