Recent research from the Harvard School of Public Health shows the B vitamin folate decreased the risk of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in men. In the study, published in The Journal of Nutrition (2003, vol. 133:2863-2867), researchers collected data pertaining to diet and vitamin supplement use from 46,036 men. They documented 308 cases of PAD in the 12-year follow-up. Their findings indicated that for every 400 micrograms-per-day increment of folate intake, the risk of PAD decreased by 21 percent. Men in the top category of folate intake (median = 840 micrograms per day) were at 33 percent lower risk of PAD than men in the bottom category (median = 244 micrograms per day). Researchers also found weak inverse associations between vitamins [B.sub.6] and [B.sub.12] and PAD.
