It was probably unintentional, but the operas at the Santa Fe Festival last summer shared the same theme--infidelity, and not just casual infidelity but infidelity as the central occasion and the cause of the action's catastrophe. Infidelity is, of course, an inexhaustible topic, and the five operas in this year's repertoire (seen July 29-Aug. 2) revealed a fascinating variety of facets, from the grinding tragedy of Kata Kabanova to the inspired lunacy of La Belle Helene.
