SUSAN CHILCOTT, Bristol U.K., July 8, 1963--Timsburry, U.K., September 4, 2003

One of the most graceful and intelligent singing actors of her generation, Chilcott made her professional debut at Scottish Opera in 1991 and subsequently appeared at Welsh National Opera, Opera North and ENO. Her first appearance outside Britain, as Ellen Orford in Willy Decker's 1994 production of Peter Grimes at the Monnaie in Brussels, was a tremendous success, and Chilcott was soon in demand throughout Europe, with engagements following in Paris (Fiordiligi, Tatyana), Geneva (Donna Elvira) and Amsterdam (Kata Kabanova and Blanche de la Force). Subsequent appearances in Brussels included Hermione in the 1999 world premiere of Philippe Boesmann's Wintmarchen. She made her U.S. debut in 1996, as Donna Elvira for Santa Fe Opera, and sang Britten's Governess for Cincinnati Opera in 1999. Chilcott was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000 but continued to perform after surgery and treatment. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut, as Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream, in April 2002, and her Covent Garden debut came the following summer, as Lisa in The Queen of Spades. Her last stage role was an English-language Jenufa at Welsh National Opera in March 2003, conducted by Charles Mackerras; illness prevented Chilcott from recording the role with Mackerras, as he had wished.
