Composer Benedetto Ferrari, who lived through most of the seventeenth century, was also a theorbo player and keyboardist. He was particularly noted for his poetic texts, which often range over the ups and downs of love and were also set by other composers. (Some of his words found their way into Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea.) This selection of his music, taken from all three books of his Musiche Varie, raises hope for a complete recording of one of his operas. May it have production values as high as those on this release!
It would have been revealing to hear two or three singers share this varied repertoire, but Philippe Jaroussky is a capable soloist. He has the most feminine of countertenor voices, one that gains fullness in the upper register and is here used in an enjoyably direct manner.
