In his booklet note, Michel Parouty calls this collection a "gallery of portraits devoted to a voice distinguished ... by its rarity." The point is debatable: there is a flotilla of mezzos--Bartoli, Podles, Larmore, Kasarova, Barcellona, Ganassi, et. al.--in the bel canto repertoire today; most of these ladies could essay the selections on this disc. What distinguishes Vivica Genaux from her colleagues is the smoky complexity of her timbre. It's an instantly appealing sound, dark in color yet light in weight: despite the booklet's claims for Genaux as a contralto, she's clearly a lyric mezzo.
The intrinsic charm of her voice notwithstanding, Genaux exhibits stone technical failings that stand in the way of full enjoyment of her singing. Sustained notes are uncertainly focused, with a manufactured, almost gargled quality. It roughens the texture of slower passages, such as the cantabile section of an aria from Donizetti's little-heard Alahor in Granata. Genaux's passagework is certainly impressive; she's able to ...
