Feb. 12--When federal agents run a nuclear emergency drill in York County in April, many will view the work through the prism of a post-Sept. 11 world.
The last time such an exercise was run, in May of 2001, the prism was shaped by several problems uncovered by two previous drills.
The 2001 drill showed vast improvement over drills in 1999 and 1997, according to a final report issued in October by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Daily Record recently obtained the report through a Freedom of Information Act request.
The drills focus on how well emergency centers throughout a five-county region would handle a potential release of radioactive material from Three Mile Island in Dauphin County.
During the 2001 exercise, FEMA officials detected no deficiencies for York County alert centers.
