PALESTINE, Texas _ Rhoda Longmire was deep into a novel about the 18th century when she heard a boom that sent her running to her porch.

"You didn't know if the world was coming to an end or what was happening," said the 71-year-old retired Texas rancher.

"It was horrendous. It was so loud. It was just really unbelievable," Longmire said. "We've been through hurricanes and tornadoes and have heard the booms when they used to break the sound barriers. Those didn't compare to what this was."

Her walls shaking and her husband out feeding the cows, Longmire ventured out alone. She feared going farther than the porch, so she didn't see the vapor trails that her husband, Lowell, saw from the field. She had no clue what ...
