WASHINGTON _ White House chief of staff Andy Card was channel surfing in his cabin at Camp David Saturday morning when he learned that something terrible had happened to the space shuttle Columbia.
Card relayed the bad news to President Bush. Within minutes, the chain of events that led to Bush's hastily arranged speech to the nation was underway.
Once again, it fell to a president to give voice to a nation's shock, grief and bewilderment in a time of tragedy.
