CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. _ Catastrophe struck America's space program again Saturday as shuttle Columbia disintegrated in the skies over Texas, killing six Americans and Israel's first astronaut.

The disaster came 17 years to the week after seven Americans died in the explosion of shuttle Challenger.

Eerie, telltale contrails of white smoke spiraled earthward through the morning skies to confirm the nation's worst fears.
