MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. _ The first thing the first baseman needed upon becoming a Cub was something every player needs, wherever he happens to play.

He needed a number.

Eric Karros wore 23 on his back for the Dodgers. Wore it proudly. Wore it day in, day out for a full 11 years.

But among the veteran's virtues as a teammate is a respect for tradition.

"And I'm no fool," Karros said over lunch in this oceanside Los Angeles suburb one day last week, tapping his temple.

Ryne Sandberg wore 23.
