One company worked out a deal with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), as 2001 came to a close, while another was actively pursing a settlement as a result of cases filed by the regulatory commission in August alleging market manipulation. Nevertheless, the parade of lawsuits, allegations, criminal charges, and investigations appears destined to go on for some time.

Avista Corp. said on December 6 that it hoped to reach an agreement with federal energy regulators to resolve charges that the power trader schemed with Enron Corp. to manipulate California's electricity market.
