On paper, the Met's season premiere of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor looked like a strictly routine revival of Nicolas Joel's murky, unimaginative production, with several cast members returning from earlier runs. In the event, this Lucia far exceeded expectations, thanks to two of the principal singers and the inspired conducting of Patrick Summers.
