On November 13, the Manhattan School of Music hosted one of the most exciting master classes in years when LAUREN FLANIGAN put seven of the school's young singers through their paces. In his introduction, the Manhattan School's vice president/dean of faculty RICHARD ADAMS pointed out that twenty years ago, Flanigan was a student herself in one of BIRGIT NILSSON's master classes at the Manhattan School. (Two of the others were DAWN UPSHAW and DOLORA ZAJICK.)

Possibly because she is only a single generation away from them, Flanigan forged a natural connection with all seven of her students. She had done her homework thoroughly and spent most of the three hours concentrating on characterization. She showed baritone CHRISTOPHER CLAYTON, who sang "They Wish They Could Kill Me," from The Ghosts of Versailles, how to show humor rather than indicate it, and she helped soprano AMY SHOREMOUNT turn the Queen of the Night into something other than a screeching harpy.
