For years, RICHARD OWEN has been leading a double life: federal court judge by day, opera composer by night. This month, he steps off the bench once again when the Manhattan School of Music presents his latest effort, Rain, based on the classic W. Somerset Maugham story. Most of Owen's previous works have dealt with people of consequence: Mary Dyer, the Quaker martyr; Abigail Adams; Caravaggio. Taking on Rain, the story of the collision of a missionary and a prostitute in the South Pacific, marks a significant departure for him. His wife, LYNN OWEN, sings good-time girl Sadie Thompson, and his son, RICHARD OWEN, JR., conducts the performances.
