More than 14 million people across Canada and the United States show signs of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of irreversible blindness among North Americans aged 65 and older. Pigment in the macula--a small area at the back of the eyeball--seems to act as a blue-light filter to protect that region against oxidation by light.
