Jan. 13--With winter in full stride and the threat of frozen pipes ever present, homeowners still can catch up by taking a few preventive steps Give the cold a crack and it will open the door to problems, said area plumbers who've answered the call to thaw or fix broken water pipes.

"Eliminate any cold air source into the house," said Joseph P. Backo, a journeyman plumber with C.W. Schultz & Son Inc. in Wilkes-Barre.
