Jan. 10--With about 20 percent of the petitions having been checked, City Clerk Gina Dutcher's office has verified 1,485 of the 3,321 signatures needed for a referendum to force the reconsideration the city's new smoking ban.
Opponents of the ban turned in petitions with what they said were more than 10,000 signatures on Wednesday.
If 3,321 of the signatures are valid, the ban will be returned to City Council to either repeal or to be taken before a vote of city residents.
