EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. _ The last time the Panthers beat Martin Brodeur in New Jersey, Bill Clinton hadn't even been elected to his second term as president.
It was the Year of the Rat _ Doug MacLean was behind the bench, Panthers fans hadn't heard of Chris Wells yet and a Stanley Cup Finals run was just a dream.
But during Wednesday's New Year's Day matinee, the Panthers eked out a 2-1 victory over the Devils to defeat Brodeur at the Meadowlands for the first time since Feb. 21, 1996.
Overall, it was Brodeur's first loss to the Panthers since April 9, 1997, snapping a 16-0-3 unbeaten streak including the playoffs.
"It's over. (Time to) start again," Brodeur said.
Brodeur will have ample opportunity. Wednesday's game against the Panthers was the first of three in 13 days for the Devils, who have the third-most wins in the East.
