Thursday's game
Orange Bowl
Iowa (11-1) vs. USC (10-2)
WHEN: 8 p.m.
TV: ABC.
ABOUT IOWA: The Hawkeyes come in with a nine-game winning streak and the Heisman runner-up in senior QB Brad Banks, a Belle Glade native who originally signed with UCF. Iowa has a number of key players who, like Banks, are from South Florida and should enjoy playing in front of the home folks. Iowa is nicely balanced on offense, averaging 222.1 rushing yards and 210.8 passing yards per game. Banks is a good athlete who can tuck it and run, and 5-foot-8 TB Fred Russell (121.9 ypg) is a tough yet darting runner. The line, which has four senior starters, may be the best in the nation. TE Dallas Clark is a weapon, and WRs Maurice Brown (Ft. Lauderdale Aquinas) and C.J. Jones (Lantana Santaluces) have combined for 78 catches and 19 touchdowns. The defense has been superb against the run (second in the nation at 68.1 ypg), and a big reason has been the play of two alums of South Plantation High: LB Fred Barr (109 tackles) and T Colin Cole (78 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, eight sacks). The secondary can be exploited, which has to worry Hawkeyes coaches on Thursday.
