SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. _ He fed his father. He washed his father. He carried his father to the bathroom, time after time.

Over 12 years, as the diabetes dug deeper, Vince Wilfork became his father's keeper _ first watching his kidneys go, then his eyesight, his hearing, and, finally, last June, they were down to a final good-bye.

In that last visit, the son placed his University of Miami national championship ring in his father's palm and saw a smile he still sees today.

His father had started him in football, attended his every game, helped out at many practices, even in college _ "been a waterboy to me and my teammates," as Wilfork says with a soft chuckle.

David Wilfork was 48.

"I thought that would be the worst of it this year, my father passing," Wilfork, the standout Miami defensive tackle, was saying Tuesday morning. "I mean, what are the odds of something else?"
