PHOENIX _ They are a little larger than the circumference of a quarter. You can buy a sheet of 10 for $5.95 at Conrad's College Gifts on Lane Avenue in Columbus, Ohio.
But for those privileged enough to wear the scarlet and gray, they are priceless. More treasured than hand warmers on a snow-blown Saturday afternoon.
This is the 35th anniversary of Buckeye Leaves, those tiny, round decals that cover the silver helmets of Ohio State's finest players. Even reserves and walk-ons get their share of merit stickers, depending on the level of their contributions and the generosity of the coaching staff.
Say what you will about second-ranked Ohio State and how tense it appears for this Fiesta Bowl week. Even the biggest Buckeye basher has to admit the leaves are pretty cool.
Fill up a standard helmet with the maximum 88 stickers _ always starting with the left side _ and you're pretty special. Show too much silver, and it can get downright embarrassing.
"Oh, it's big," says Danny Swain, Ohio State's head equipment manager since 1991. "I've had kids come up to me and say, `We didn't get the right amount on there.' That's all the kids talk about: how many Buckeye Leaves they got."
