MIAMI _ The blank canvas doesn't intimidate Dallas Clark. He stares at an unblemished, pregame football field and never wonders how he might create something special.
The source of Clark's motivation is unchanging. He looks toward the heavens and inspiration rains down until he's soaked to the skin.
Jan Clark didn't see her son win the Mackey Award for being the nation's best tight end this season. She didn't see him off to Iowa, where he walked on as a linebacker. She won't see him lead the Hawkeyes onto the Pro Player Stadium field for Thursday's FedEx Orange Bowl against Southern California.
Yet Clark still plays like his mother is in the front row.
"She's my No. 1 inspiration and was my No. 1 fan," he said. "She was always there and the greatest supporter I could possibly have. A lot of my motivation is from her and to prove to her what a great son she had."
A few days before Clark's 1998 graduation from Twin River Valley High School in tiny Livermore, Iowa (population 436), Jan was in the garage sweeping up for a party to mark the occasion. Inside watching television, Clark heard his aunt scream.
