JACKSONVILLE, Fla. _ N.C. State safety Rod Johnson called his grandfather "Papa."
Papa was the one who took him to football practice when he was little. On the way back, Papa would buy him a hamburger or run him by the toy store, where he bought him his first Nerf hoop.
"You know, the kind that hangs over your door?" Johnson said Wednesday. "He was like a father figure to me. I've got a father, but he was more than grandfather. I don't know how else to describe it. He always made me smile."
Papa had to be smiling Wednesday.
Johnson tied an N.C. State record with three interceptions in the Wolfpack's 28-6 Gator Bowl victory against Notre Dame.
Papa _ Julius Simpson, age 74 _ died Dec. 26 in Texas. By then, Johnson was in Jacksonville with his teammates.
