ORLANDO, Fla. _ A pass by Zack Mills fell into the hands of diving Auburn defender Roderick Hood with less than two minutes remaining, and the Penn State quarterback hurried to the sideline. In effect, his hopes for some season-ending heroism had been crushed.
With arms outstretched, Mills stopped in front of Kenny Carter, coach of the Nittany Lions' receivers, and asked, "What happened?"
That's a question that Penn State's coaches, players, and enormous contingent of followers were left to ponder until September after the Nittany Lions' disjointed offense spent an entire sun-splashed afternoon going nowhere as No. 19 Auburn (9-4) scored a 13-9 victory before 66,334 on Wednesday in the Capital One Bowl at Florida Citrus Stadium.
The loss almost certainly means that Penn State (9-4), which entered the game No. 10 in the Associated Press poll, will finish out of the top 10 in the polls for the sixth consecutive season.
