JACKSONVILLE, Fla. _ North Carolina State wrote a Grinch-like finish to Notre Dame's return-to-glory season, leaving the Irish in a 28-6 shambles before 73,491 fans Wednesday in the 58th Gator Bowl game in Alltel Stadium.
Thus Notre Dame's first season under coach Tyrone Willingham, which broke out in such grand style, wound up with losses in three of the last five games, and the stifling by the Wolfpack was the sixth straight bowl game the Irish have dropped. The late sag all but overshadowed a resurgent 10-victory campaign as Notre Dame concluded 10-3.
