MILWAUKEE _ Fly fishermen are notorious for carrying a wide assortment of flies in different colors and patterns when they are on a stream in pursuit of trout.

The seemingly endless variety can be intimidating for a guy like me who likes to keep things simple.

So I asked Pat Ehlers what he would bring along if he was restricted to just a half-dozen fly patterns for trout. Ehlers, who operates the Fly Fishers shop, in West Allis, Wis., has more than 30 years experience fly fishing. His answers may give fly tiers something to work on this winter.
