A new study of family spending habits shows that healthy items only inflate the grocery bill for the first few months.
As families who participated in the study became more practiced at making healthier choices, food costs actually dropped. The results appeared in the September 2002 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.
In the study, participants were encouraged to eat plenty of foods such as fruits and vegetables, which are high in nutrients and low in fat and calories. At the end of the one-year study, overweight children and parents ended up 5 to 8 percent less overweight than at the beginning.
And contrary to the belief that healthier eating is more expensive, their costs actually decreased, falling to the level of the "low-cost food plan" devised by the US Department of Agriculture.
