Royal Opera's incoming music director, Antonio Pappano, stepped into the Covent Garden pit on September 6 to warm applause to conduct his first new production. The vehicle was Ariadne auf Naxos--assuredly a tricky assignment for everyone involved. Pappano brought with him director Christof Loy, one of his regular collaborators at his former domain, La Monnaie in Brussels. Loy's designer, Herbert Murauer, provided the audience with a coup de theatre minutes into the piece.
