In conversation with Virginia Zeani, the words that crop up most often are "faith" and "destiny." Both relate indelibly to her association with Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites. The soprano created Blanche in the work's world premiere at La Scala, which coincided with a significant crossroads in her personal and professional life.
