From the thirty-six children of the onstage chorus for Carmen, thirty-six hands immediately fly into the air, and giggles and excited chatter briefly break out. It is the morning of one of the last staged rehearsals of Carmen before opening night, and Elena Doria, director of the Metropolitan Opera's Children's Chorus, asks the question during the chorus's vocal warm-up. Posed in Doria's teasing, faux-tyrannical style, it is only half rhetorical, and it reflects perfectly the spirit and attitude of this ensemble.
