Project targets enhanced electrical transmission and distribution system. (News).
SAN JOSE, CA -- A unique project to assess the benefits of distributed generation and managed load to an electric power network has kicked off here with the support of area businesses, government agencies, the local utility, and other experts.
The project demonstrates how a group of businesses with a shared concern and geographical proximity can take the initiative in dealing with energy issues that individually would be more difficult to solve.
The San Jose Mercury News estimated that rolling blackouts in 2001 cost Silicon Valley businesses more than $1 billion.
One of the participants, Optimal Technologies (USA), Inc. of Benicia, CA, has developed a new system analysis tool that will help determine where within the network additions of generation and managed loads will have the greatest benefit.
Optimal's AEMPFAST software can "optimize a combined transmission and distribution network under projected scenarios for adding distributed energy sources. With these new capabilities, we will be able to evaluate possible combinations of. distributed energy additions, assuring the grid provides benefits at the most effective costs," says Roland ...
