Dec. 13--RALEIGH, N.C.--Two charter schools that were in danger of being shut down for poor academic performance received a one-year reprieve Thursday from the State Board of Education.
The state board voted 8-1 to allow Carter Community School in Durham and Sugar Creek Charter School in Charlotte to remain open for the 2003-04 school year after their five-year licenses expire in June. The board said it will again consider closing the schools if they don't show improvement on this year's end-of-grade tests.
