Nitrate solutions could play a key role in extending the production life of oilfields, according to Norsk Hydro. Hydro has been experimenting with pumping sodium and calcium nitrate and other nitrate-based chemicals into some of its wells in the Nome field. The nitrates prevent acidification and hence corrosion of pipes, and phosphates can also be added, the N and P stimulating bacterial growth in the oil reservoir.
