JACKSONVILLE, Fla. _ Forget the kicking game, Jimmy Smith's inability to get open and a defensive line that would struggle to push a child on a playground swing, the Jacksonville Jaguars might want to keep an eye on Coach Tom Coughlin's memory.
Following Sunday's 25-23 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Coughlin apparently forgot most of what his team had just done on the field, choosing to remember only the final few minutes.
"I'm proud of them," he said. "Say whatever you want, they never quit."
When he did discuss what exactly wasn't working early on for the Jaguars, he quickly transitioned his speech with phrases like, "But we found a way to do something about it in the fourth quarter."
Despite his positive words, Coughlin knows_and certainly his players know_by the time the fourth quarter rolled around, it was too late. As they have earlier this season, the Jaguars again lost a game in the first three quarters. This time_a sixth loss by 7 or fewer points_it likely cost Jacksonville its slim chance at a playoff appearance.
"It shouldn't have come down to that (point)," wide receiver Smith said of his team's fourth-quarter comeback.
The Jaguars are two games out of the division lead and an unlikely wild-card berth would be wild indeed.
