No. 3 Iowa has pulled even with No. 13 Notre Dame as the first choice of the FedEx Orange Bowl, according to BCS sources.
The 11-1 Hawkeyes, who have a strong following, are considered by most to be a lock for the Rose Bowl to play the Pac-10 champion. But Notre Dame's 44-13 loss to No. 5 Southern California on Saturday night makes the Fighting Irish less attractive as the Orange Bowl's lead team.
"It's a much different situation today than it was two days ago," one BCS source said, "and with games left involving Miami and Georgia and Washington State, it could change again."
If USC (10-2) is ranked No. 4 in the final BCS poll, the Orange or Sugar bowls must select the Trojans if they don't end up in the Rose Bowl. Jerry Palm, the Chicago-based BCS poll calculator whose predictions have proven accurate, said Sunday he expects USC to jump ahead of Iowa to No. 4 when the weekly BCS standings are released today.
If that happens, either Iowa or Notre Dame will be left out of the BCS because there are only two at-large positions.
"This is worse than the nightmare scenario with four unbeaten teams," Palm told CBS Sportsline.
The Orange Bowl's preferred matchup of Notre Dame against Oklahoma lost some of it luster with both teams losing on Saturday, and the Sooners still have to beat Colorado in the Big 12 Championship Game.
