ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. _ The clock ran out on the Bills, but Dave Wannstedt was still out of luck.
Wannstedt challenged Drew Bledsoe's 2-yard touchdown dive in the second quarter, not because he thought Bledsoe had failed to get in, but because he felt the quarterback had failed to get the third-down play started before the play clock expired.
"I was just hoping that once they looked at the touchdown again ...," Wannstedt said.
He was hoping, though he knew the officials could not reverse a call that is related to status of the clock. So Wannstedt, who needed some help from offensive line coach Tony Wise getting the red flag out of his pocket, lost the challenge and a timeout.
"Being that it was a touchdown, it was worth it," Wannstedt said. "I wanted to make sure they have a clear look at it, and just hoping."
REELING RANDY
After he was shut out against San Diego, tight end Randy McMichael had two catches, but for only 2 yards. And he also had a fumble, when he was reaching for extra yardage on third-and-7. He wasn't close to a first down and conceded he should have protected the ball.
