Niners dodge Seahawks, avoid 3rd consecutive loss.(Knight Ridder Newspapers)
SAN FRANCISCO _ They were at it again Sunday, looking pretty bad, pretty good, pretty bad and finally pretty fortunate. The San Francisco 9ers can't seem to lose for winning. As they seized control of the NFC West, or Worst, they frequently looked like a team that won't last long in the playoffs.
This time, the resistible force outlasted the moveable object. In the hide-your-eyes end, the 49ers' pass defense was a little less vulnerable than Seattle's rushing defense. The 49ers allowed 427 passing yards and 24 points. But Seattle's NFL-worst run-stoppers allowed Garrison Hearst 124 yards on 31 carries and the 49ers a 31-10 lead early in the fourth quarter.
That was barely enough _ but enough just the same. A late interception at the 49ers' 32 saved another day. Who knows? Maybe the unlikely interception by extra defensive back ...
